Our Passion under main, genoa and mizzen

About Us

Two captains, one boat, and the bay we call home

Buzzards Bay Charter Company is owned and run by Capt. Mason Almeida and Capt. Lynne.

There is no office, no fleet, and no rotating crew. When you book a charter, the two people who answer the phone are the same two people who will be aboard with you.

Our Captains

Forty years of sailing between us

Both of us hold U.S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master licenses, along with lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certifications. Between us we have more than forty years of sailing experience, and it is not all coastal daysailing. Our Passion has carried us on long offshore passages, including a run of better than a thousand nautical miles up from Florida.

That experience matters most on the days you never notice it. Knowing when to reef, when to change course, and when a forecast is worth respecting is what lets you relax and enjoy the day.

Our Boat

A 42-foot Pearson 422 ketch

Two masts, three working sails, and a 58 horsepower Westerbeke diesel for getting on and off the dock and for the days the wind does not cooperate.

She is comfortable in a way modern charter boats often are not: teak below, real wrap-around cushioned seating, a marine head, and a stern swim platform with a hot and cold fresh water shower for rinsing off or warming up after an ocean swim.

The galley is there for you to keep your own food and drink cold and organised, since every charter is bring-your-own. We will not be cooking but we can help serve you, and you will find that is part of the appeal, because the day is yours to run how you like with your own food and beverages that you choose to bring.

Who We Are, and Who We Sail With

Everyone is welcome aboard

Buzzards Bay Charter Company is Black-owned, women-owned, and owner-operated. We mention it because it is true and it is rare in this business, not because it narrows who we are here for or who we want to go sailing with.

Our guests are everyone. Families and couples, first-time sailors and lifelong ones, people celebrating something and people who just wanted a quiet afternoon on the water. Race, ethnicity, background, sailing experience, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability: none of it changes the welcome. If you want to come sailing, we would like to have you aboard.

Why Private Only

The boat is yours for the day

Every charter we run is booked privately for the whole boat. We do not sell seats, and we do not put strangers together.

Six guests is a small enough group that we can actually pay attention to you. If you want to take the helm, we will teach you. If you want to sit quietly on the bow with a drink and not talk to anyone, that is a perfectly good way to spend an afternoon too.

The Bay

Home water

Buzzards Bay is home water for us. We sail out of Mattapoisett and Woods Hole, and we know where the wind fills first on a light morning, which harbor to duck into when it pipes up, and where the water is calm enough for a swim.

Buzzards Bay is widely considered some of the best sailing grounds on the Atlantic coast of the United States. It is a beautiful stretch of water and it never feels crowded, and it delivers a reliable sailing breeze nearly every summer afternoon.
